Mom, Dad & Whit Hit The Road

They just got their reverse 911 call telling them Del Mar is under mandatory evacuation and they need to leave. The fire still seems to be a far distance away, but the wind is blowing in their general direction so they want everyone out. This San Diego fire is covering such a huge area- this fire started so far away from where my parents live that it is hard to comprehend how much space it is covering. At this point the evacuation is seeming like more of an annoyance- hopefully it will stay that way.

I talked to them as they were driving out and we we all got a laugh as they followed a little convertible that had its top down to accomodate a huge painting in the back. Makes one think- if I had only a convertible to put my most tresured things in what would I take?

Lance and I experienced fires in Malibu. We have prepared to leave before- it is strange to try to figure out what things you have that can't be replaced. It puts the concept of material possessions in a whole other light.

Whoa I can't believe it came to this!! Please keep us posted and I do hope it is just an annoyance!!!! I heard that they may just let it burn to the ocean because it's so large - insane!! We will include them in our prayers!

Wow that's crazy. I had heard the same thing about it possibly burning to the ocean. It's unimaginable. Your poor parents and Whitney - thanks for the update - we'll keep checking back!

I too hope it stays an annoyance for your family. It's so sad what's happening.

Latest Update- Mom, Dad, and Whit were able to get back in to their house for some sleep and showers late last night. The area is still under evacuation, but the fire continues to be a good distance away at this point and it is extra tough for them to be at the evacuation sites with Whit. They are keeping a close tab on things and are ready to go at a moments notice. For now all is well. We're hoping the same for all of our friends in Malibu.

All is quiet on the western front of San Deigo. Mom, Dad, and Whit have remained at home and the fire continues to go further and further in the other direction. Pepperdine is back to school today, so all seems to be back on track there as well.

We feel so bad for all the people that have lost (and continue to lose) their homes- the numbers are just staggering.
